Summary

This report examines seismicity and ground motions for the 4 September 2010 and 22 February 2011 Canterbury earthquakes. It presents concepts of seismic hazard analysis and design ground motions to assist an understanding of the design ground motion provisions in the New Zealand seismic loading standard (NZS1170.5:2004) and examines relevant New Zealand seismicity models for consistency with respect to the Canterbury earthquakes. The observed strong ground motions are compared with empirical New Zealand-specific ground motion models.
